Submissions for SAND 29 will open from 30 June to 20 July, 2025*

SAND publishes visual art, poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, flash fiction, flash nonfiction, and translations that push the boundaries of form, message, and voice in fresh and unpredictable ways. We are all about work that subverts, work that takes real risks.

SAND welcomes both emerging and established creatives to submit their work for publication. We encourage submissions from a range of perspectives, especially from writers and artists who are LGBTQIA+, women, nonbinary, BIPOC, migrants, refugees or stateless, Muslim, Jewish, Disabled, neurodivergent, working class, and/or otherwise marginalized in mainstream publishing (particularly in Europe, where we are based).

*There are submission caps on fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, so these categories may close early. Please send work early to avoid disappointment, and stay up-to-date on our social media channels.

  • We accept previously unpublished poems, short stories, flash fiction, translations, and visual art.
  • We pay semi-professional rates that vary according to our funding (typically €20-€40 per piece)
  • SAND is run by a passionate team of volunteers and funded solely through issue sales and small donations. The €3 reading fee for poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction submissions helps us to cover the essential costs of running the journal.
  • We provide a free submission option for writers and artists for whom fees create a financial barrier to submitting.
  • Simultaneous submissions are welcome, but please inform us as soon as possible if the work has been accepted elsewhere.
  • You may submit to multiple genres, but you may only submit once per genre
  • We only accept work that is the creative effort of humans with lived experience. All submitters will be required to confirm and fully disclose the role that AI and other non-standard technologies have played in the creation of their submitted work.
  •  Please allow six months for a response before sending an inquiry.

The best way to get to know if your work is a fit for SAND is by reading digital or print issues, or by checking out the many excerpts, readings, and editor interviews at SAND ONLINE and on our Instagram channel.

  • We want art that takes things as they are, and gives them back a little different. T.S Eliot described the artist's mind as a shred of platinum, which in the presence of sulfur dioxide and water acts as a catalyst to form sulfurous acid. It creates an atmosphere of mutation, transforming the neighboring elements into something new. It experiments on the world and itself. We are interested in work that uses the elements of culture, history, science, politics, nature, emotions, color, shape, and texture to reflect and digest life. Make us laugh, cry, hesitate, stand in silence, be confused. Leave us feeling calm or unsettled, in lightness or in darkness. Make us look into cracks for details, or surprise us with grandeur. Follow these rules, or don't, but send us something good.
  • We accept all forms of visual art, including photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture, installation, performance and film/video stills, as well as trans/inter/multi-disciplinary work. We are interested in both full-color and grayscale images.
  • Artwork may have previously appeared in an exhibition or online, as long as it has not been included in a magazine, catalogue, or other print publication.
  • Please send 5-10 pieces for consideration, and include a link to your website if available.
  • Please include an artist statement contextualizing the pieces you’ve submitted and/or your work as a whole.
  • JPG, PNG, and TIF formats are acceptable.
  • All images must be at least 300 dpi and in high resolution: at least 2480 pixels tall x 1748 wide so they can potentially be printed in a full page of our magazine. Prospective cover images should be at least 2500 x 3600 pixels.
Ends on €3.00

Please send us:

  • Poems that take interesting risks. Your weird poems, your challenging poems, your sensitive poems.
  • We want poems that are attentive to their language. We like to see specific and deliberate methods for setting the words on the page. If your work considers classical forms and uses them to new ends, send it. If it rejects traditional forms and forges new ones, we want it.
  • Please keep in mind that our journal size is A5. Due to design considerations, prose poetry that is particularly wide is likely to undergo some spatial shifts during the editing process.
  • We will not consider submissions over 5 pages. Please do not send multiple submissions.
  • Please do not include your name or any other identifying information on your submission.
  • We may suggest edits, but the poet has the final say over these.
  • Please note that if we accept a poem, we may not be able to accommodate edits made by the poet post-submission.
  • Please submit your poems as a word document. If your submission includes concrete or visual poetry, please additionally submit a PDF.

Translations:

  • We welcome translations into English, including self-translations.
  • If available, we will include the original version of a poem alongside the translation.
  • The original work may be previously published as long as it has not been translated into English before. Permission must be granted for publication in SAND from the author and the translator and, if necessary, the author’s publisher.

Note on images:

  •  If your submission contains any images, please ensure that they are available in print resolution (300dpi) and, if they are not your own work, they are copyright free, or you have express written permission from the owner for them to be published in SAND.

If our €3 reading fee creates a financial barrier for you, you can submit your work for free here. It's important to us that our submissions remain accessible to everyone.

Fiction & Flash Fiction:

  • Send us risk-taking, subversive, experimental fiction with soul. We are especially interested in literary fiction that crosses genres, that takes risks with structure/form/voice, that subverts expectations, and that includes multi-dimensional characters who represent the full range of identities in the world. To ensure your submission is right for SAND, check out the resources linked in the general guidelines above.
  • We accept previously unpublished short stories, flash fiction, and translations. We do not read full novels, full novellas, or plays. We will read stand-alone excerpts from novels, but only if they truly stand alone.
  • We only accept work that is the creative effort of humans with lived experience. While we are open to work that has experimented with and incorporated technology in creative ways, we do not accept work that has been fully or mostly written by AI (artificial intelligence). All submitters will be required to confirm and fully disclose the role that AI and other non-standard technologies have played in the creation of their submitted work.
  • Submit EITHER one short story OR a single file with up to three flash fictions. We will automatically reject multiple fiction submissions from the same author.
  • Short stories should not exceed 3,000 words. While there is some flexibility here, we will not publish pieces that are over 3,500 words.
  • Flash fiction should not exceed 1,000 words per piece of flash, and 3,000 words in total.
  • Do not include your name or any other identifying information on your submission. Submittable records your name and other information, which will be hidden during our first round of reading. We will automatically reject any submissions that include identifying information on the submission document.
  • Please include a third-person biography with the cover letter that you send through Submittable. This information will remain confidential during the first round of reading.

Translations:

  • We would like to publish more translations of fiction into English, and we encourage the submission of suitable pieces.
  • The original work may be previously published, as long as it has not been published in English translation before.
  • Permission must be granted for publication in SAND from both the author and the translator and, if necessary, the author’s publisher.

Creative Nonfiction & Flash Nonfiction

  • Send us risk-taking, subversive, experimental nonfiction with soul, that pushes the boundaries of form, narrative, and/or language. We want to read stories that need to be told from perspectives that aren’t always heard, and to be excited by the ways you’re interpreting the nonfiction genre. Perhaps you are incorporating epistolary, intertextual, or ekphrastic elements, or you are giving voice to inanimate objects; perhaps you have written a hybrid text, or a craft essay; or your story might be told more traditionally but the content itself is the twist. To ensure your submission is right for SAND, check out the resources linked in the general guidelines on our main page.

  • Here are the word counts for each option: One short piece of nonfiction of no more than 3,000 words; A single file containing up to three pieces of flash nonfiction (of up to 1,000 words each, not to exceed 3,000 words in total).
  • Do not include your name or any other identifying information on the document you submit. Submittable records your name and other information, which will be hidden during our first round of reading.
